Is PQQ Good For Fertility?

PQQ is an antioxidant that is believed to promote the health of mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of every cell. They are the source of energy and serve as an energy currency for all cells.

Some researchers have suggested that PQQ may improve the quality of female eggs. The quality of oocytes is affected by the presence of oxidative damage in the ovary. In addition, high levels of ROS can lead to a decrease in follicle numbers.

Moreover, a study on mice showed that PQQ supplementation can prevent ovarian dysfunction induced by the cancer drug CTX and BUL. However, the mechanism is unclear.

Another study by Jonscher et al. reported that PQQ may increase placental surface area and follicle weight in mice.

The study also demonstrated that PQQ may improve fertility by reducing apoptosis and inflammation in the ovaries. It was also found that PQQ can improve the number of sperm in the follicles.

There are many fertility practitioners that encourage the use of PQQ. Aside from being an effective antioxidant, it is also known to enhance mitochondrial activity. This can promote the development of new mitochondria. New mitochondria will support growth and development, and provide the needed energy for important functions.

Researchers from the Nanjing Medical University in China conducted an animal study to determine if PQQ is beneficial for reproductive performance. The study was approved by the Changzhou Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital Ethics Committee.

For the study, 60 female mice were divided into three groups. One group received feed containing no PQQ, a second group was fed with PQQ, and a third group was given PQQ*Na2 supplementation.
